Securing a Second Home from Abroad

Many Bahamian homes are second homes, empty for weeks or months at a time. A well-planned system gives you eyes on the property and peace of mind.

Think in layers

Security works best as a combination: deterrence, detection and a way to respond.

  • Deterrence: visible cameras and exterior lighting that comes on with movement.
  • Detection: cameras with motion alerts and door or window sensors.
  • Response: a trusted local contact, caretaker or monitoring service who can check the property.

Camera placement

Cover entrances, driveways and the areas around the building, rather than trying to see everything. Use outdoor-rated cameras, and be aware of the effects of salt air on exposed equipment. Point cameras at your own property, and be mindful of your neighbors’ privacy and any local rules.

Reliable remote access

Remote viewing depends on the internet connection and on power. Plan for battery backup at the router and recorder, and test that alerts reach your phone when you are in another country and time zone.

Lighting and occupancy simulation

Scheduled or varied lighting makes a house look lived in. Pairing this with lighting control is simple once the system is in place.

Access control

Smart locks let you grant a caretaker or service provider temporary access without handing out keys, and review who came and went. Choose hardware suited to the environment and the door.
