A Homeowner’s Guide to Whole-Home Lighting Control

Good lighting control is about more than convenience. It sets the mood of a room and takes the thinking out of everyday routines.

What is lighting control?

Lighting control replaces ordinary switches with dimmers and keypads that communicate with a controller. Instead of flipping many switches, you press one button to recall a scene: a saved combination of light levels across several fixtures.

What you gain

  • Scenes: “Evening”, “Dinner”, “Movie” or “Away” from one keypad or your phone.
  • Dimming: softer light and longer lamp life.
  • Schedules: lights that follow the sunset or simulate occupancy when you’re away.
  • Fewer switches: a clean wall with labeled keypads in place of a bank of toggles.

Wired or wireless?

Wireless systems are well suited to existing homes because they need little or no new wiring in the walls. In a new build you can use a wired or wireless system, and the wiring plan should be decided early. Dimmers also need to match the type of light source (LED, for instance), so choose compatible fixtures and drivers.

How to plan it

  1. Walk through the home and list how each room is used.
  2. Decide where keypads should live: bedside, entry, kitchen, near the garage.
  3. Choose light fixtures and sources that dim smoothly.
  4. Group lights into scenes and name them clearly.
  5. Integrate with your control system so lighting can work with shades, audio and security.

Part of a bigger system

Lighting is most valuable when it works together with other systems, as covered in our smart home basics guide.
