Keeping Your Network and Cameras Running in a Power Outage

Power interruptions are a fact of life in many parts of the Bahamas. A little planning keeps the equipment that matters online or shuts it down safely.

Decide what really needs power

Trying to back up everything is expensive. Most homes get the best value by protecting a short list:

  • The modem or fiber terminal and the router or gateway.
  • The main network switch and Wi-Fi access points (especially if they are powered over Ethernet).
  • The camera recorder and the cameras that cover entrances.
  • The home automation controller, so scenes and schedules resume cleanly.

What a UPS does

An uninterruptible power supply holds the equipment up for a period of time when mains power drops, and conditions the power that comes in. Runtime depends on the battery size and the load. Add up the wattage of what you plan to connect, leave headroom, and ask for the expected runtime at that load rather than assuming a number. A UPS also gives equipment time to shut down properly, which protects storage and configuration.

Power over Ethernet helps

When access points and cameras draw power from a single switch, one UPS behind that switch can keep many devices alive. This is a good reason to plan the cabling and switch location with backup power in mind. See also Wi-Fi in large concrete homes.

Generators and transfer switches

If your property has a generator, a properly installed transfer switch is what connects it safely to your electrical system. Even with a generator, a UPS is still worthwhile: it bridges the short gap while the generator starts, and smooths the changeover. Generators and fuel handling should be installed and operated by qualified people following the manufacturer’s guidance.

Don’t forget the internet itself

A UPS cannot keep your internet service working if your provider’s network is down. For remote properties, ask your provider about their own outage resilience and consider whether a second connection or mobile backup is appropriate for your needs.
