Where DIY works well
- A few smart bulbs, plugs or a video doorbell.
- Renters or temporary setups.
- Low-stakes experiments where occasional glitches are fine.
Where professional design pays off
- Whole-home scale: many rooms, many devices, one coherent experience.
- Network foundation: properly designed Wi-Fi and cabling, as covered in our Wi-Fi guide.
- Integration: lighting, audio, video, shades, climate and security working together from one app or keypad.
- Support: someone accountable who can monitor and fix the system, including remotely.
- Local conditions: equipment choices and installation methods suited to coastal conditions and storm season.
Think about total cost
DIY hardware often costs less up front, but time, troubleshooting, replacing incompatible devices and shipping to the islands can add up. A professional system costs more initially and is designed to be maintained and expanded. Compare the whole picture, not just the price of the devices.
Questions to ask any provider
- What happens if something stops working, and how quickly can it be addressed?
- Can the system be supported remotely?
- What happens to the system if the installer is unavailable?
- Which products are used, and are they easy to expand and replace?
- What is included in a written proposal?
You don’t have to choose one extreme
Many homeowners start with a solid network and core control system, then add devices over time. That is a sensible path.
